Grace Cathedral

This is Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Very recently, Jim Hodges created an installation piece entitled “Unearthed” which I believe represents a sort of culmination of the themes of this paper. The dead roots and stump of a massive blackened tree sits within the church like some primordial god or gothic sculpture. The artist wished for this tree to merge with the congregants, becoming familiar and therefore sacred. Finally, in some form, we are returning to the Earth, or, as timid humans, we are at least considering it. Perhaps by “unearthing” our past and providing an art piece, a relic to symbolize the sacred soil (or the sacred spring) that we have elevated ourselves from, we can reconnect with the primordial source in the Anthropocene.
